Berlin School Grounds Study Tour


Berlin probably has the most amazing school playgrounds anywhere, driven by a strong belief in the importance of good external environments for children’s wellbeing and learning. You can get a feel for these amazing spaces by looking at the case studies and images from Grounds for Learning.

Following a successful study tour to Berlin last June, Grounds for Learning is hoping to run another tour in June 2013, provisionally from 12th - 15th June.

LGN Street Design Awards 2013


Local Government News (LGN) is accepting nominations for the 2013 Street Design Awards. The Street Design Awards recognise best practice and innovation in street design schemes across the UK. The awards are free to enter and are divided into six categories: urban green space, highways, public lighting, children's play, community-led design and pedestrian environment.

Vacancy: Cycling Hub Officer

FEL_logo_colourForth Environment Link seeks two Cycling Hub Officers for the Stirling Cycle Hub.

The cycle hub is a pilot which aims to promote and increase cycling.  Based at Stirling Train Station, the hub will provide information and resources about cycling, and develop partnerships in the local community.The hub is being funded by Transport Scotland in partnership with ScotRail, and will be open 7 days a week. The role of the Cycle Hub Officer is to provide cycle-related information and referral services to the public and be an ambassador for cycling.

JNCC Habitat Restoration Audit


The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) has commissioned a review of habitat and ecosystem services restoration projects across the UK, to help determine if the UK is on course to meet the 2020 target of maintaining and enhancing ecosystem services and restoring 15% of degraded habitats.

Scottish Soils Database & Website


In February, staff from the CSGN Support Unit attended a seminar on The Scottish Soils Database and Website project. This is the development of a pilot national website for soils supported by a database holding data from a range of sources. It is intended that the database be populated with relevant data and information on soils in Scotland held by stakeholders including the James Hutton Institute (JHI), SEPA, SNH, FCS, and others where identified. It is anticipated that the SSDW will eventually constitute a daughter soils website within the SEWeb resource.

CSGN Forum 2013 Planning Underway


Over 200 of you attended last year's conference in Glasgow and plans for the 2013 CSGN forum in Edinburgh are now well underway. The event will celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland. We are delighted to be able to confirm our first two speakers.

Atelier Dreiseitl will be over from Germany to talk about design and management of water demonstrating a number of their world renowned projects (think Chicago City Hall Roof Garden and Berlin’s Potsdammer Platz);

Pennine Prospects will be presenting the South Pennine Watershed Landscape Project. This project was the winner of the UK Landscape Award 2012 and has been submitted as the UK’s entry to the Council of Europe’s European Landscape Award for 2013.

Scotland's Finest Woods Awards 2013 are now open for entry. (The deadline for entries is 31st March 2013.) There are four award categories with a total of £6,750 of prize money.
