CSGN Forum 2013 Planning Underway

Over 200 of you attended last year's conference in Glasgow and plans for the 2013 CSGN forum in Edinburgh are now well underway. The event will celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland. We are delighted to be able to confirm our first two speakers.

Atelier Dreiseitl will be over from Germany to talk about design and management of water demonstrating a number of their world renowned projects (think Chicago City Hall Roof Garden and Berlin’s Potsdammer Platz);

Pennine Prospects will be presenting the South Pennine Watershed Landscape Project. This project was the winner of the UK Landscape Award 2012 and has been submitted as the UK’s entry to the Council of Europe’s European Landscape Award for 2013.

Scotland's Finest Woods Awards 2013 are now open for entry. (The deadline for entries is 31st March 2013.) There are four award categories with a total of £6,750 of prize money.

Vacancy: Tree & Woodland Officer

Stirling Council are currently recruiting for a Tree and Woodland Officer. In partnership with the Forestry Commission Scotland and under the direction of the Land Services Team Leader, the post will support and co-ordinate the management, inspection and maintenance of Stirling Council’s 10,500 street trees and 1485ha of woodland to enable Land Services to meet it’s challenges in managing this asset.


The officer will also lead the development of the Council’s asset management strategy relating to amenity trees and woodlands, including tree inspections and reporting, woodland management and maintenance including the production and implementation of woodland management plans.

Larbert Woods Soon to be Unveiled

The woodland on the ground of Forth Valley Royal Hospital, known as Larbert Woods, has been transformed since 2011 and work is soon to be finished. NHS FVRH, Forestry Commission Scotland, Central Scotland Forest Trust and Falkirk Council have been working together to improve the green space for staff, patients, visitors and the local community.

 In addition, the project is making a major contribution to the Central Scotland Green Network, one of Scotland’s National Developments.

Vacancy: SBIF Coordinator

The Wildlife Information Centre (TWIC) is seeking to employ a Coordinator on behalf of the Scottish Biodiversity Information Forum (SBIF). The SBIF Coordinator will support the functions of SBIF, which has been set up to collectively tackle the fundamental challenges that inhibit an effective biological data flow system spanning from the point of collection to the point of use. The post holder will carry out research on the overarching issues relating to biodiversity data in Scotland and take forward initiatives that come from the research and the SBIF Steering Group and Sub-groups. They will be the SBIF focal point for the biodiversity data community.

The RSPB and WWT have produced a handbook on Sustainable Drainage. This guide is aimed at local authorities and developers and sets out ways in which SuDS can be designed and managed to maximise biodiversity benefits.
