In March, the Ecosystems Knowledge Network held a training event in Edinburgh to demonstrate the InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Trade-offs) decision support tool. InVEST is free software developed by the Natural Capital Project. Abigail Page from the CSGN Support Unit attended the event to learn more about the tool.

Sharing Good Practice Events 2013-14

Details of the 2013-14 Sharing Good Practice event series, run by SNH, have been published online. Sharing Good Practice is a unique programme of events for people from a wide variety of sectors, including land managers, local authorities, health, business, education, voluntary and government. These events provide an opportunity for practitioners with differing levels of experience to network, learn from experts, influence future policy, share ideas, gain new insights and inspiration.

Environmentally Based Employment and Training Programmes

Under our ‘A Place for Growth’ theme, the CSGN aims to increase employment and training opportunities in land-based ‘green’ and ‘low carbon’ industries with the objective of not only providing meaningful work experience and support for unemployed people but also to improve local greenspace for everyone to enjoy.

To gather baseline data and identify where best practice activities are taking place, the CSGN Support Unit has commissioned consultants, Why Research, to carry out an audit of relevant training and subsidised employment schemes within the CSGN area.

Integrated Habitat Network Forum 2013

The first Integrated Habitat Network Forum was held in March in Glasgow to bring together around 40 Integrated Habitat Network (IHN) data users from local authorities, agencies, environmental charities and universities. The Forum was an excellent opportunity for stakeholders to share experiences of IHN use and develop thinking on how the IHN data can be improved in future years. The event was hosted jointly by Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland and the CSGN Support Unit. Discussion points from the workshops and message boards on the day are helping to inform the development stages of an improved IHN for 2014/2015, and will directly influence the next version of the data.

Updated Central Scotland Forest Strategy Published

Central Scotland Forest Trust and partners have released a revised Central Scotland Forest strategy. This highlights what has been achieved since the first strategy was launched in 1995 and sets out some ambitious targets for the future. Woodland cover, which stood at 11% at the start of the Forest’s development, now stands at 18% against the original target of 22%. The strategy review has provided the opportunity to define the role of the Forest in the context of the Central Scotland Green Network and to underline its importance in improving the quality of life in a historically degraded part of Scotland.

The findings are now being launched as a suite of case studies. These ‘Your Business, Your Greenspace’ reports demonstrate how enterprises of all sizes, from all sectors, can meet business objectives and targets whilst playing a key role in developing greenspace.

Dr. Gyeng Chul Kim, President of the Korean Transport Institute speaking about the Cheongyecheon Restoration Project; and

Michael Schwarze-Rodrian, Director of the Department & EU Representative of the Regional Association Ruhr speaking about the response to vacant land and derelict structures in the Ruhr and how this has led to world class parks and new uses, for example IBA Emscher Park and Zollverein.
